Unlike short stories, novels and novellas allow for deeper plot and character development. It’s a fascinating form that allows for much reflection.

What Types of Novels Do I Edit?

I enjoy editing all types of fiction. However, I am most familiar with literary fiction and genre fiction (hard and soft science fiction, horror, thriller, mystery, and romance/queer romance).

Which Authors Do I Recommend?

Far too many!

If I had to narrow it down, I’d choose some of the classics (James Baldwin, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, William Faulkner, Shirley Jackson, Ayi Kwei Armah, Luis Zapata, Pedro Lemebel, Naguib Mahfouz, Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, V.S. Naipaul, M.G. Vassanji, Roald Dahl, Horacio Castellanos Moya, José Revueltas, Leo Tolstoy, Nikolai Gogol, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Boris and Arkady Strugatsky, Arthur C. Clarke, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Sadegh Hedayat, Maryse Condé, Zora Neale Hurston, Manuel Puig, Chinua Achebe, Mikhail Bulgakov, Jane Austen, Langston Hughes, Ann Radcliff, Steven King).

I would also choose some of the contemporaries (Camillla Sosa Villada, Ahmed Saadawi, Vivek Shraya, Billy-Ray Belcourt, Fernanda Trías, Olga Tokarczuk, Uzma Jallaluddin, Oyinkan Braithwaite, Waubgeshig Rice, Claudia Rodríguez, Liu Cixin).

Overall, I recommend contemporary novels, in English, in their original language, and in translation.

Novels Editing Rates and Process

For novels, I offer

manuscript evaluation at $40 CAD per 1,000 words,
developmental editing at $55 CAD per 1,000 words,
stylistic editing at $55 CAD per 1,000 words, and
copy editing at $50 CAD per 1,000 words.

This includes

an email discussion of your editing needs and project specifics,
one round (three passes) of editing, and
a follow up email discussion regarding any clarifications or questions.

At our agreed upon due date, I will provide you with

an edited document (either a Microsoft Word document with “Track Changes” and comments or a Google document with “Suggested” edits and comments),
a clean Microsoft Word or Google document,
a general inclusive language summary,
a summary of my editing suggestions, and
a style sheet of my edits.

Novel Editing Terms and Conditions

All prices are quotes in CAD.
Upon receipt of documents, a contract will be sent to the Client, which must be signed prior to commencing work.
This contract will establish scope of work, expectations, and timelines.
A 50% deposit must be sent via e-transfer or PayPal prior to the Editor commencing work.
The remaining 50% will be due within 10 days of completed work and receipt of Editor invoice.
