Proofreading

Proofreading.Proofreading Defined

Known as the fourth and final stage of editing, the proofreading stage focuses on reviewing the document in its final stage, prior to printing, following a thorough copy edit.

During this stage, I will consider both text and design elements in your document. In particular, I will flag typos, minor grammatical issues, incorrect punctuation, and capitalization problems.

Please note that clients sometimes, understandably, confuse proofreading with the copy editing stage (which focuses on finer details, such as grammar, spelling, usage, and consistency) and stylistic editing (which focuses on sentence flow, readability, and meaning). Proofreading is not a substitute for copy and stylistic editing.

For this reason, I offer sample edits. These can help you decide what type of editing your document requires and if this partnership is a good fit.

Proofreading Rate and Process

For both fiction and non-fiction, my rate is $35 CAD per hour (at 6 pages per hour – 250 words per page).

This includes

  • an email discussion of your proofreading needs and project specifics,
  • one round of proofreading, and
  • a follow up email discussion regarding any clarifications or questions.

At our agreed upon due date, I will provide you with

  • a proofread document (either a Microsoft Word document with “Track Changes” and comments or a Google document with “Suggested” edits and comments),
  • or a PDF with standard proofreader’s marks (depending on your preference).
Additional Information

During my editing process, I adhere to Editor’s Canada Professional Editorial Standards.
