Unlike novels and novellas, editing short stories is like reflecting on an entire world in a small little package. Care must be taken at every step of the way. This is what makes it so much fun.

What Types of Short Stories Do I Edit?

I enjoy editing (and reading and writing) all types of short stories. However, my favourite genres are (both hard and soft) science fiction, horror, and mysteries and literary fiction.

Which Short Story Authors Do I Recommend?

So many!

If I had to narrow it down, I’d choose a mix of the classics (Ray Bradbury, Julio Cortázar, Horacio Quiroga, Roald, Dahl, Anton Chekov, Rabindranath Tagore, Edgar Allan Poe, Jorge Luis Borges, Raymond Carver, Juan Rulfo, Shirley Jackson, Zora Neale Hurston).

In addition, I would choose many of the contemporaries (Bora Chung, Jhumpa Lahiri, Camillla Sosa Villada, Ted Chiang, Mariana Enriquez, Lilliana Blum, Alejandro Zambra, Priya Sharma, Thomas Ligotti, and María Fernanda Ampuero).

And above all, I enjoy reading widely and diversely, including short stories in their original language (if possible!) and in translation.

Short Story Editing Rates and Process

For short stories, I offer

manuscript evaluation at $40 CAD per 1,000 words,
developmental editing at $55 CAD per 1,000 words,
stylistic editing at $55 CAD per 1,000 words, and
copy editing at $50 CAD per 1,000 words.

This includes

an email discussion of your editing needs and project specifics,
one round (three passes) of editing, and
a follow up email discussion regarding any clarifications or questions.

At our agreed upon due date, I will provide you with

an edited document (either a Microsoft Word document with “Track Changes” and comments or a Google document with “Suggested” edits and comments),
a clean Microsoft Word or Google document,
a general inclusive language summary,
a summary of my editing suggestions, and
a style sheet of my edits.

During my editing process, I adhere to Editor’s Canada Professional Editorial Standards.

Short Story Editing Terms and Conditions

All prices are quotes in CAD.
Upon receipt of documents, a contract will be sent to the Client, which must be signed prior to commencing work.
This contract will establish scope of work, expectations, and timelines.
A 50% deposit must be sent via e-transfer or PayPal prior to the Editor commencing work.
The remaining 50% will be due within 10 days of completed work and receipt of Editor invoice.
