Developmental Editing

Developmental Editing Defined
Congratulations on completing your manuscript, and welcome to the world of editing.
Developmental editing, or substantive editing, is known as the first stage of editing. It is usually followed a stylistic edit, a copy edit, and a proofread.
The developmental editing stage focuses on the “big picture.” This includes ensuring a logical structure and outline.
Specifically, for works of fiction, this stage focuses on plot, themes, character development, and point of view.
In other words, the goal of development editing is to prepare a solid base from which to further refine.
However, it is possible to combine the developmental editing stage with a stylistic edit. Please contact me anytime for a quote.
